| Some reactions used in volumetric analysis are self indicating because the reaction uses strongly coloured reactants (for example manganate(VII) titrations). In the case of acid - base titrations an indicator is needed to visualise the end-point. The correct choice of indicator is essential to get a distinct end-point. The indicator must undergo a complete colour change within the pH change at the equivalence point.
